DIVIZIONZ!
In 2007, the Ugandan feature-length movie titled DIVIZIONZ! was released. It is a film by Yes! That's Us (a DEDDAC/Switch Media production), written and produced leading Ugandan filmaker Donald Mugisha and South African James Tayler. Starring FireBase Crew's "ghetto president" Bobi Wine, his "vice president" Buchaman, Bunny 'Lot' Olem and Catherine 'Scarlet' Nakyanzi, the film is shot in and around the ghetto slums of Kampala. Telling the familiar story of up-coming musicans struggling, hustling and blagging their way through life, frienships are made and destroyed in the process. The cinematography is stunning and almost every aspect of life that most people would consider unique to Kampala is captured, from considering jumping the fare on a taxi, to problems with boda-boda riders, washing in the street, buying rolex and being hasselled by local security officers. A bitter-sweet comedy, this film is a funny and moving portrait of life in the Kampala slums at the start of the 21st century, filmed and produced in a visually fascinating way, with creative use of colour, location and camera angles.
CHiLLUM WOODS SOUND was asked to license some of the music from its catalogue for use in the film's soundtrack. Other music supplied by Roadblock and performances by the film's lead actors were complimented by the unique, acoustic African music of Akiiki Romeo, Thornhead and Kinobe. Various edits and arrangements of Empisi Y'Owanyu from the album "CHiLLUM WOODS SOUND Presents Akiiki Romeo" and the Luo song "Gen Lobang" by Thornhead, accompanied by Kinobe, were used as title music and incidental and transition music. Both of these songs are available as audio on the website.
DIVIZIONZ! has been very successful here in Uganda, both in movie theatres and halls and on DVD for home viewing. The film is being showcased at a number of international film festivals and it is generating a huge 'buzz' ahead of the prestigious Berlin Film Festival in February 2008.
Donald Mugisha is well known in the region for his international standard music videos. With the importance that is placed on music videos here in Africa, CWS accepted payment for its services and licences for DIVIZIONZ! In the form of music videos for some CHiLLUM WOODS ROOTS reggae singles. News of the releasae dates of the music videos will appear on the website.
CHiLLUM WOODS SOUND would like to thank and congratulate Donald and the rest of the team for their achievments in this and past and future projects.
